Portsmouth paducah project office12/27/2022 The vision of PPPO is to safely accelerate cleanup, ensuring protection of the public and environment, provide jobs for southern Ohio and western Kentucky, and work with the local communities to provide opportunities for economic growth. * Business support services, including financial management, information technology, human resources, public affairs, legal, property management, security, safety and quality assurance Today, the Office of Environmental Management awarded a financial assistance grant to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The office provides consolidated management and services including: PPPO’s goal is to accelerate cleanup at the two sites, eliminating potential environmental threats, reducing the DOE footprint, and reducing life-cycle cost. Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office Paducah Site The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) was constructed in 1952 to produce enriched uranium, initially for the nation’s nuclear weapons program and later for nuclear fuel for commercial power plants. PPPO maintains a strong presence at the sites on a daily basis through its Portsmouth and Paducah Site offices. Although the PPPO Manager is based at the Lexington project office, frequent and routine site interactions occur between management and staff among all three locations. PPPO was established on October 1, 2003, to provide focused leadership to the EM missions at the two sites, encompassing decontamination and decommissioning (D&D), environmental remediation, waste management, and depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) conversion. EM began its cleanup program at the sites in the late 1980s. Under a commercial lease in 2001, and the Paducah plant ceased production operations under a commercial lease in 2013. The Department of Energy’s Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio, and its plant near Paducah, Kentucky, were built in the early 1950s to enrich uranium for national defense applications and later for commercial nuclear power plant fuel. Located in Lexington, Kentucky, the PPPO office lies between the Kentucky and Ohio Sites.
